Bienvenue a Douarnenez

On the edge of the Atlantic bay that bares its name, Douarnenez sits. An ancient celtic fishing settlement, the town grew on the sardine industry and now welcomes the new century. Intertwined with Breton tradition , sailers , surfers, now call Douarnenez home.

The market hall and town centre sits above the old narrow cobbled streets of the fishermen and women’s cottages. Walk down past chapels, galleries and studios, to the two ports now dominated by cafes, restaurants, museums, shops and bars. Here the locals meet to in the long summer nights, as boats sway and sun sets over the beaches and hills opposite.

Walk across the bridge to Treboul and you will find the Port de Plaisance. Take apéro at one of the local bars, visit the bi-weekly market, walk its charming winding streets to the towns principle beach. Go local, grab a crepe and a bowl of cider for lunch. And don’t forget Douarnenez’s delicious speciality butter cake, the Kouign Amann.

Then to burn off any excess, Douarnenez is a hub for sports with lessons and equipment hire for a multitude of activities. Sailing , surfing, kite-surfing, windsurfing, rambling, and remember Brittany is the centre of French cycling. So rip your legs off on the coasts rolling hills or relax with a family ride along the old railway line to Quimper or along the Brest Canal.

We made Brittany and this little town our home. We love it here and can’t wait to show you a fantastic holiday. See you soon…..
